HMS Bounty

By Sir Ernie Hamilton Boyette

Painting 36x48"

Closer view of painting.

I will write here about the Bounty as I have time in the future. Just don't watch the Hollywood movie version. The writers of  scripts for historical movies like the Bounty are at best incompetent, ignorant and brutally savage when it comes to accurate historical events. The movie does show the ship beautifully so just turn down the volume so you don't have to listen to the stupid script.

The Bounty was a perfect example of shipping of its time. As with many other ships of the time it lived a short life. The length and shape of the hull along with the canvas area, perfectly calculated to properly propel this vessel fairly safely around the world. Even though cargo ships like the Bounty would be eventually eclipsed by the development of the four mast Gray Hounds of the sea like the Cutty Sark, and Flying Cloud, that would be one hundred and fifty years in the future. At the time the Bounty was a very functional vessel.

For the Royal Navy, ships like the Bounty were perfect for fleet service. It was quicker than the Ships of the Line and served easily between the warships transporting foods, supplies and weapons as well as liaison and communication proposes. The Bounty was cost effective in its design and its operation.

The Bounty was a multi-propose cargo ship. Much like the Liberty Ship of its time. The English Navy was to promote trade and be able to protect its trade routs world wide. The government was also active in personal intervention into international trade. Why would the English Navy allow the Bounty be used to transport tree saplings to a tropical island for an already rich Englishman to start a plantation, enslave the local peoples and become even richer? The English and American Governments are famous for helping the rich get richer. Ever read about what happened to the country of Hawaii?
